Massive Investment in Bridlington Links Starts

Now the investment money has started to flow into Bridlington, with the construction of new roads, as well as work starting on a new gym as well as the purchase of new cardio-vascular and weights equipment to fill it. £150,000 has been spent to date and the total increases every day.

The future of the Bridlington Links Golf Club, which had been operated by the Hancock family since 1999, had been in doubt for some time but today looks better than ever.

Under the guiding hand of John Morphet, the driving force behind the hugely successful Royal Westmoreland Golf and Leisure Resort in Barbados and three other major golf and leisure developments in the UK, Bridlington Links is already starting to the see the benefit of the investment required to transform it into one of the finest sports facilities of its kind in the region.

“Since purchasing Bridlington Links three months ago, the potential has become increasingly obvious to me. It is clear that we are going to be able to build something truly world-class here. It is with that in mind that we are investing in improving what already exists while enjoying extremely positive discussions with East Riding Council about the next steps” commented John, a former farmer, whose prestigious property portfolio in the Caribbean includes luxury villas hand built for major world sports and showbiz celebrities. Famous names include cricketers Andrew Flintoff, Michael Vaughan and Mike Gatting, golf Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam, footballers Rio Ferdinand and Manchester United colleague Wayne Rooney as well as boxer Joe Calzaghe.

Subject to planning permission from East Riding Council, the Links project will benefit from a £3.5 million investment providing a state of the art fitness and leisure centre, including a swimming pool, close to the 18-hole golf course as well as the refurbishment of the Grade 1 listed Danesdyke building.

The investment has been welcomed by the club’s management, Phil Hancock and his daughter Julie Thompson. “It’s fantastic to be able to bring such an investment to the Links, and to Bridlington,” said Phil, “especially at a time when good news stories like this are so thin on the ground.”

The Links, which occupy a premier location on Bridlington Cliffs on the award winning Heritage Coast, already has 43 luxury log cabin lodges.

And as the credit crunch bites and recession takes hold, entrepreneur John Morphet is bucking the trend and investing in major leisure schemes creating hundreds of new jobs and providing holiday and leisure alternatives for people who do not want to be disadvantaged by the weakness of the pound and the dollar and are looking to holiday in the UK instead.

The Pure Leisure Group, whose headquarters is on the edge of the Lake District, was founded twenty years ago and in addition to the 750 acre Royal Westmoreland resort in the Caribbean, owns the largest timber lodge development in the UK – the Lakeland Leisure Village as well as Tydd St Giles golf club in Cambridgeshire.
